What is Super Duplex Stainless Steel?
Super Duplex stainless steel is a combined microstructure comprising a 50:50 ration of ferrite and austenite. Duplex alloy already demonstrates a significant improvement over regular austenitic and ferritic steel grades. Super Duplex takes things further with an increased chromium and molybdenum content. This makes the resultant steel far more hard-wearing, with increased ductility and stress corrosion resistance.
Properties of Super Duplex Stainless Steel
Stainless steel fasteners are available in several grades.
304 (A2 or B8) stainless is one of the most popular grades of stainless steel and is classed as commercial grade stainless. With a chemical composition of 18% chromium and 8% nickel, the high chromium percentage offers excellent corrosion resistance.
316 (A4 or B8M) takes things further. The addition of molybdenum provides further resistance against corrosion. 316 stainless also tends to include more nickel.
Although the mechanical properties of grades 304 and 316 stainless steel are broadly comparable, the addition of molybdenum alongside increased nickel content in 316 stainless makes for greater resistance to chemicals including acids and chlorides. This makes 316 ideal for chemical, medical and marine applications.
